Report from Justin Bisengimana, Rwanda Program Director:

Just before the holidays we delivered mattresses to our co-ops which were purchased with donation from World Dance for Humanity. Many of the co-op members have never owned or even slept on a mattress, and some of them are in their 70s. We hope the photos and video can tell you how life-changing this was for them.

You can see the people sitting on their new mattress. Life does not seem to be the same for them anymore. You may think you have given something small, but it is very big. I wish you would feel it the way we feel it. Just look at the joy in their faces! This day was a special day in the life of this entire community. It will take a big page in their history.

The woman in the photos, above, is Athanasie, she and her two kids used to sleep on a torn up mat made of papyrus leaves. Imagine saving someone from sleeping on the ground like this. Will this story die? Never!

A mattress provides more than good sleep. It also gives the family hope that change is possible. With hope, they can think clearly about improving their lives. Having good sleep gives them more strength for the work which is the pillar of their future.

Do not think you just donated mattresses. It is far beyond that. These people need your presence in their lives so they can feel they are as human beings as you are. Thank you for bringing happiness to them!

Dancila’s bed was made of banana mat and old clothes – see her joy with a mattress – for the first time in her life! Real life starts from the inside. Having hope and happiness inside us is what makes the outside look much better. Our trauma come from our challenging situation. I don’t think that you can easily think clearly any time you are still sleeping on the ground.

It has been very incredible for Josiane and her family. Her kids feared to sit on their new mattress because they couldn’t understand what it was. A new life was given to this family. You can easily see how a mattress was needed in this house. 4 kids and their mother sleeping on those rags. It is very priceless to help someone move from such a situation to this incredible one. We are surely needed to help people make their dreams a reality or to help people even dream of having a new life.

“I used to be very judgmental, thinking my husband Damascene could have bought a mattress for the family, though I knew he had no means to buy it. Now my burden is taken away. We are among families that have mattresses. Thank you so much our donors.”   – Sitting on her new mattress brought Claudine into tears which really shows what a mattress means in their lives.

Dany Rukundo, Assistant Program Director: Today after looking at photos, videos, reports of three years working with you, my head up, light hand on hair thinking about WD4H, Janet, Justin and our community. I have one thing to say about mattresses project that we offered at Tubehotwese. All our community that we serve is struggling with basic needs – food, clothes, water, health insurance, school fees. Thanks to Justin and WD4H, many of them now eat twice a day and are dressed in clothes that were impossible before your presence. But it is very sad when you can eat, but at night you lack when you can sleep comfortable. It isn’t rest, but night-hardship. Thanks Justin who took a first to speak out for those who are not able, Thanks Janet to be there as  one who testify all above I am saying, Thanks WD4H for supporting our beneficiaries, Thanks all donors to help community we serving to sleep comfortable.  We can’t wait to see bring such joy to the other cooperatives. Biracyaza! Onward!
